Slated as one of the oldest cities of the country where several mighty dynasties showcased their authoritative temperament, Bhopal, a beautiful fusion of Hindu and Islamic cultures, has a proud history replete with many unsung tales.
The grand city was founded by King Bhuj of Parmer dynasty in the 11th century. History says, the mighty Mughals ruled over the city till the early eighteenth century. In the year 1723, the ferocious Afghan soldier named Dost Mohammed set up the the princely province of Bhopal. The timely support of tribal queen Rani Kamalpathi helped Dost Mohammed to drive away the Rajput rulers.
In the glorious history of Bhopal, Begums did play an important role. The royal ladies were in charge of the state administration for more than hundred years. One such name was Begum Nawab Sultan Jahan, the famous Begum Rulers, whom history till date salutes for her administrative skills.
The year 1926 witnessed was eventful as Hamidullah, the son of Sultan Jahan inherited the throne and the 'Instrument of Accession, was signed which allowed the city to be a part of the Indian Republic in 1947.
